The Bible—God’s Revelation to Man

The Bible is divided into two parts: 1) the Old Testament—written to, and for, the Jews—containing 39 books; and 2) the New Testament—containing 27 books. The New Testament fulfills and abolishes the Old Testament (as far as its being an active covenant or law—it is still God's word and of much value) and was a shadow of things to come (Matt. 5:17; Col. 2:14-17; Gal. 3:23-29). It contains information pertaining to salvation for both Jews and Gentiles (1 Cor. 12:13) as well as instructions for the new spiritual kingdom and its inhabitants—the church (Luke 22:16; Col. 1:13; 1 Cor. 14:37).

The Bible covers three periods of time: 1) Patriarchal; 2) Mosaic; and 3) Christian. Each period is commonly referred to as a dispensation. This word has to do with the type of administration or method of dealing with an individual or group that God used or uses throughout each period. During the Patriarchal age (Adam to Moses) God dealt with people through the heads of the family. During the Mosaic age God worked through various individuals such as kings and judges. The third and final age is the Christian age. Until the end of time on earth God speaks through Jesus, who has all power (authority) in heaven and earth (Heb. 1:1-2; Matt. 28:18).

An Old Testament prophet wrote, "O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps" (Jer. 10:23). This being true, and due to the fact that the "whole duty of man" is to "fear God and keep his commandments" (Ecc. 12:13), what better way can we use our time than in study of the Bible so God can direct our lives?
