Ask for the Old Paths

Jeremiah 6:16 - Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.

The Old Testament is filled with many lessons for Christians. It was written for our learning (Rom. 15:4) and for our admonition (1 Co 10:11). One such lesson found in the Scriptures occurred in the days of Jeremiah, who lived during a time of religious and social turmoil. The nation of Israel was being pulled in many directions but the Lord wanted to offer them rest for their souls (Jer. 6:16). Using the imagery of travelers who have lost their way, the Lord calls for them to “ask for the old paths.”

The Lord makes his plea:

1. "Stand in the ways and see." More than one path exists; one might travel in many directions.

2. "Ask for the old paths." The old way is often the best way. Such is certainly the case here.

3. "Where the good way is." Not all paths lead to the good way. Some paths lead to destruction (Mt. 7:13).

4. “Walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls.” God offered the Israelites rest for their souls if they would walk in the old paths. In this case, the old paths led back to the Law of Moses. (See Jeremiah 7:22-24.)

Jesus makes a similar plea today for us to strive to enter the right path–one that has a gate that is narrow, and is not easily entered (Lk 13:24). This path is the only way to the Father (Jn 14:6; Acts 4:12). We must strive to enter the right path because other broad ways are accessible for one to follow (Mt 7:13). The way that many pursue leads to destruction, but the way Jesus offers is a good way--the one that offers rest for our souls. He says "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls (Mt 11:28-29).
